The Laws Of A Nation Starts At The Border

According to the US Customs Border and Protection (CBP) agency, a subsidiary of the Department of Homeland Security, there is more than 328 ports of entry in America through which immigrants are allowed to enter legally, allowing them the opportunity to apply for naturalization on the long road to citizenship. However, in 2021 there has been a rise in people crossing the Southwest land border, or Mexican- American border, illegally. In the month of February alone, the CBP reported 100,441 illegal crossings in comparison to February of 2020 when there were only 36,687. 

As the Biden administration continues to push for the amnesty of more than 14 million illegal immigrants, the President is also facing growing concerns regarding his mental health state. The current administration has also said that it is struggling with messaging, causing confusion amongst CBP agents, cabinet officials, immigration czars, and the American populace. It is also under fire from the right, former President Donald J. Trump being the most prominent of the conservative critics, and from the left from the likes of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez, who has been especially critical of the President’s team for opening up detention centers that house children who have been separated from their parents.

The Biden Administration has emphasized the point of their candidates 2020 presidential campaign promise to cease the continuation of construction on the border wall and the lifting of the travel ban from countries with high levels of terrorism. They refuse to call it a crisis. They refuse to give specific numbers on whether there are 3,200 children being housed in the detention centers, of which 1,400 have stayed over the imposed 72 hour limit that the Biden administration had implemented. Also getting rid of the stay in Mexico policy, while saying that it is seeking to discourage the number of illegal immigrants coming into America. Furthermore, Jen Psaki (the current White House Press Secretary) has spoken derisively about the previous administration’s more strict approach, saying that they had been “Immoral and inhumane.”

At the same time all this is taking place at the national level, state leaders, such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott, are taking action. Governor Abbott has ordered the Texas National Guard, under the name of Operation Lone Star, to combat human trafficking, drug smuggling, and the growing industry of running people across the border. But they are facing a great deal of frustration as they are having to deal with the fact that, according to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, there was no communication between the Federal government and state governments when it came to the sudden change of policy. This includes the recent policy change of releasing COVID-19 positive immigrants into the local US populace.

With election year 2022 around the corner, and with former President Trump having made inroads with the Latino community for the Republican Party. Both Republicans and Democrats are seeking to make political hay out of a bad situation. It is a crisis that has been raising valid concerns about Democrats like Representative Henry D. Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez, both of whom represent districts that are near the border. There are further concerns about Representative Gonzalez in his connection to a Chinese bank.

“We are weeks, maybe even days, away from a crisis on the southern border. Inaction is simply not an option,” Cueller said in a news release. “Our country is currently unprepared to handle a surge in migrants in the middle of the pandemic.”
