Jan 6th Commission: A Commission of Truth? Or Lies?

By Ethan Hay

Since the protest at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021, the mainstream media and Democratic party have sought to capitalize on the so-called ‘attack on the Capitol.’ It began with the second impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. (1) He had already left office at the time, and he had not committed a crime as is specified for impeachment (2) to take place in the Constitution. Not to mention that the media continues to obsess over the protest, calling it an insurrection. Joe Scarborough, of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, has even said that anyone who dares question the legitimacy of the election, which was the actual reasoning for the protest, aptly named ‘Stop the Steal,’ (3) should ‘just get the Hell out!’ That’s not all that is happening. On February 15th, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that she planned to create a ‘9/11 type commission,’ (4) and on May 19th a bill creating the commission passed the House of Representatives (5) by a vote of 252-175. Thirty-five Republicans (6) voted in favor of the commission.

Let’s take a step back and ask several questions: what is the 9/11 commission? Have there been other types of congressionally approved commissions? Who is going to sit on the commission? What is the scope of the commission?

There have been, since the 101st congress in the late 1980’s to now, one hundred sixty-one commissions approved by congress, (7) of which the most well-known is the 9/11 commission. Another commission that is widely known as the Warren Commission, that investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. (8) However, that one was created by an executive order signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, so it doesn’t count.

Now, what was the 9/11 commission? It was a congressionally approved commission that was given the responsibility to investigate what led up to the September 11th, 2001 (9) attacks. The commission had ten members, five appointed by Republicans, and the other five by Democrats. The 9/11 commission came under fire (10) due to concerns of conflicts of interest from staffers and commissioners, as well as both the military and government agencies like the CIA (11) either omitting information, or giving the commission false information. (12)

Another question to ask about the January 6th commission, is who will be sitting on it? Congress has already approved of ten people serving on the commission. Five of whom will be appointed by Democrats, and five by Republicans. At this time, there have been no names put forward and the bill is currently in the hands of the US senate. However, the bill is facing stiff resistance by Senate Republicans, led by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (13) who has called the bill ‘slanted and unbalanced.’ Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson (14) said that the bill was an attempt to keep the ‘false narrative’ alive. There is also the fact that due to the filibuster, ten Republican senators would need to vote (15) on it, and that currently seems unlikely. It has however also brought back into the limelight the debate on the value of the filibuster (16) that has been raging in the halls of the senate.

It also seems as though the democratic politicians have decided to disregard the fact that there is a federal investigation being conducted by the Department of Justice, (17) albeit under the umbrella of sedition. There have also been four hundred and forty arrests made in connection to January 6th. (18) One of those arrested was a Utah resident, and Antifa activist John Sullivan (19) who filmed the death of Ashli Babbitt (20) and was selling his film to news companies. Not to mention that recently, footage has come to light of Capitol hill police actually engaging those who entered the building, such as the MAGA Viking, in conversation. The officers also guided the rioters (21) to the Congress floor.

Is the commission actually something that could be of value? Is it simply a ploy by the Democratic party and the mainstream media to capitalize on their obsession with fear? Or is it simply to distract from the fact that our country is going down the toilet under Team Biden? What do you think?
